Either it was sat in VW's storage yard for five years or it got shipped abroad somewhere for the first few years of it's life, at a guess. I doubt it was sat in storage though as they'll have sold it within five years.
......now officially dubless.

is it possible it was used as a demo or show car? My dad used to have a volvo that was used as like a demo car which i think was the same, wasnt registered for a good while after it was made. As a bonus it had all the toys and low mileage too.

I was thinking that, but they stopped building mk1s in 83/84 so why have a demo car for three/four years that you don't actually produce anymore ? I also thought that in order for it to be on the road it would need to be registered to VW at least so that it had tax, MOT and insurance etc.

Yeah n the DVLA seem to not give anyone any proper answers , like gettin blood out of a stone ,

im tryin to register mine , but i didnt get a log book with it , it was imported from the ilse of man in 2005 an say on someones drive (dont worry it is legit) without bein rregistered , ive contacted the IOM vehicle registary , they have let me know the reg number it used over there , but the DVLA cant decide weather my car should be given an AGE related plate because its an import , or re-issue its old number because it only went over the water.

its like tryin to get blood out of a stone
