Going to order a GTi...probably...

Hey guys - another newbie for you to pick on!

I'm seriously tempted to get me a new GTI but thought I'd ask for suggestions on the options to select. I want to keep cost down so nothing daft like sat nav but want the essentials. I was thinking cruise control, parking sensors, cd changer and that's about it. (Does the in dash or in arm rest cd changer carry most respect or no difference?)

Also, can anyone tell me what functionality the highline computer has over the midline? Is it just for display or does it do more??

Shadow blue metallic looks the best but thats a whole other kettle of fish...

Must at least have the DSG gearbox, faster to 60 and much more fun to drive, leather is a good option also, if you opt for the 6 cd changer then the centre armrest comes in the kit.Only had my laser blue gti for 3 weeks, the only thing thats keeping me out of it 24/7 is the fuel bill!

No double de-clutching and an extra £1300 rules the DSG out! Does drive well through.

How bad is the economy, honestly?? My MR2 roadster isn't great so I'm not after miracles!

depends where u live my friend, if u live in a town like mine with lots of traffic lights, cues, etc, then doing 30-40 mph normal round town id expect a 28-30 mpg, or something like cornwall where traffic lights dont exsist then 32-34mpg, on a round , or motorway its really good, my will do at 70mph just on 40 to the gallon. i used to drive a pug 407 diesel turbo that used to same 10 mpg better in all envioments but in all honesty, depends how you drive it, a fuel tank got me 300 miles on about £45 fill up on super unleaded. if you can train your right foot not to hit the gass at every opitunity then, it has a good economy considering its performance. 3 weeks in having mine, i cant get enough of it,watching people stop and head follow u, FORD ST'S  are common as hell, honda civic owners want the gti, its the best thing going in the hot hatch market by far my friend. go for it!!!

I agree with Phil, its a real head turner, sometimes too much.

I got the DSG, which was the main reason for buying it and its the best thing about the car, especially in London, bloody life saver.

a CD changer is a bit old hat now, get a ipod connection in armrest, and get yourself a secondhand ipod off ebay for £80 (doesnt matter if its scratched etc, as its just a hard drive) and you have 2000+ tunes at your fingertips, sorted.  also better resale in future.

I brought my car off the shelf so to speak (luckily with ipod connection), but my one regret is not having bi-xenons headlamps, I think its the way to go and as I've found its a costly aftermarket add on.

economy wise, round london, about 17-25MPG, on motorway 27-32MPG.  but I've only had it a few weeks, so haven't been very good!

I got parking sensors, cruise, centre armrest and multi-function steering wheel (which includes hi-line computer) with mine.

The test drive car had leather and I preferred the normal cloth seats.  Parking sensor and cruise because I've had them for 6 years now and couldn't imagine not having them again.  Centre armrest is useful - extra storage, somewhere for your arm and extra vents and cupholders for the kids in the back (even though they're banned from eating and drinking in the car  )

Never used the CD changer in my last car once I got an iPod so wouldn't recommend that over the iPod link.

If I'd had an extra £1300 I'd have got DSG.  Not convinced by Xenons - suppose it's one of those like parking sensors or cruise - you don't miss them until you've had them, and I've never had them

Get the armrest changer as you get an armrest with it and armrests are good!

Get the extra screen coz its £45

I could not and would not like to live without Xenon lights but this sounds too dear for the car

Hi

DSG - Simple one. It willl be a must have or not for me. Only a test will let you know. (It was a must have for me!)

Xenons- They are good, but if you aint had em, you wont miss em

18 inch alloys - Nice (I have em) but 17s are still round and do the job.

Cruise -  Can be retro fitted £150 (gonna get this)

Highline comp - For £50 it lets you set up some of the features in the car. Wish I had this.

Parking- Golf aint that big!!! Nice, but not a necessity.

But at the end of the day, if it has a VW and GTI badge at each end your gonna be happy.

We just stuck to the basic model with five doors - so long as it is a GTI!
