'99 1.8 20v (non T) Running like kack !

Some of you clever guys MUST be able to help !

Car goes well when 'booted', but is awful when driven normally with just a little throttle, say, sat at 40mph or thereabouts. It hunts and shudders along - as though there isn't a nice constant fuel supply or something ?
Also when the engine is having to 'work' going through the gears, it will shake along.

Car parks and town traffic can be really bad. The revs will shoot up and down when pulling away or changing gear.

I've had a new air mass meter and temp sensor fitted but no change, even though the 'Main Stealers' said that would cure it. It seems they just do exactly what the 'magic fault finder' tells em to do - without exactly digging any deeper and investigating.
It's booked to go back in AGAIN next week but ANY help in the meantime will be greatly appreciated !!
It also seems to be a little sluggish at times under 3k revs, then picks up ok.

Please help cos it's doin' my bloody 'ead in !!!

Cheers..... ???

could be the hall sender....... which monitors the camshaft, this sensor went on my vr6 and resulted in it performing like a 1.2!!!!

but without expert looking at it it could be something else. most dealers ripps people off.... i went too lakeside vw in stoke on trent and they are brillant we said what was wrong and he said they will look at it for ?30 and a mechanic called chris hall looked at it we spoke to him and he knew what he was talking about.

they said the hall sender was at fault after reading the fault codes and also we noticed the coolent housing leaking so we let them do it!!

we also have a problem with the brake pad light  its on even tho the pads are new and they didnt say anything about that i bet they checked the pads tho.
jsut incase they were low! i have noticed that the wire has tape around it so this may be the problem so i'm going to fix it..... if i cant i'll let them do it.........

it could be you tps sensor on your throttle! if you hve one! this is a little small box on the side of the throttle housing when the throttle is open or closed it turns a little thing inside the sensor..... which tells the ecu if your throttle is open or closed!

could be this loose connection.... worth a check.....

no coil packs on 1.8 20v non turbo!!!, bad engine running at low revs, hmmmm, id say clean your maf sensor (in between airbox and throttle housing!! give it a go, if not some one has had a similar problem and all it was was a temp sensor, (?20) from vw, id try maf first (only costs the price of solvent aerosol cleaner) then if still same change temp sensor next, then may be maf need replacing, these problems have also been cause by dodgey ht leads/plug breaking down also, theres a thread in mk4 section some where when the geezer had problem and wrote down the fix!! was about 3-4months ago i reckon!! ;D
