when is mileage considered high?
« on: 10 October 2006, 20:07 »
I just wondered what everyone thought...
when is mileage considered high? and at what stage are you put off when buying a car?

I know if you work it out like 10k a yr so forth so forth...etc etc BUT when it comes down to car buying and your put in the hot seat peoples views seems to differ. some people say 100k is high in general terms and others say 150k is low etc etc. (obviously it depends on the year).

What do you consider high mileage?

I bought my MK4 at 65000 miles for a V reg. Which I thought was a good mileage for the age of it. I must say I wouldnt have bought a 99 plate for more than 70,000 miles on the clock.

Anything german or rice is low miles if under 100k, simple.
Anything French and over 50k is dangerously high miles.

For Mk2's I look at it like this

Under 100'000 :- running in

100 - 150,000  :- Average

150 - 200,000 :- Well used

Mileage never puts me off when looking at cars, i simply look at the condition and the service history. With diesels i dont even look at the clock to check.

When I got my MK2 it had 112k on the clock. The engine sounded sweet and ran fine so I wasn't bothered.

My mate chopped in a dodgy diesel astra for a Coraddo with 180k on the clock and it still flew!

It all depends on how well a car has been maintained. An engine with 70k can sounds worse than one with double that mileage if it hasn't been looked after properly...
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!

When i bought my B (1985) Mk 2 Diesel back in May this year it only had 55k on the clock, which basically means it hasn't even left the factory yet

mine has 200k now and still going strong, dont think its recon or anything as it uses little oil, i keep changing oil regularly to prevent anything major. i always loo at history and condition before mileage with vws. All mine have been 150k plus as i am skint and never had engine trouble (touch wood)
i must buy a new car!
