rrrrr the gearbox question.... one I hate....

The following places should help....

Full rebuild of gearbox will cost 550-600 from C&R Enterprise - the only company I would use for gearbox rebuilds

Second hand one can pick up from 50-200 - but you may get the same problem or gear issues - you never know with second hand gear boxs

go onto vwgolfmk1.org.uk - mk1 golf website and ask the following members - crazyquiff or scouse as they break cars and may have a good gear box for you, I use both these guys and they are very helpful on parts for mk1's

I've brought a few gearbox - second hand and have found they don't last that long... so best to go the rebuild route, most companies will strip the gearbox down and repair what ever is broken which then keeps the cost down.

cabriolet 020 boxes:

020300046X - 9A & 4Y
020300046EX - 4S
020300046FX - 4T
020300048EX - ACD & AEN
020300050AX - AUG

Thanks si, I have already emailed crazyquiff, he thinks he might have a gearbox - but I see what you are saying about second hand ones not being reliable - the last think I would want is to have it taken out and sorted out a second time! When I spoke to Joe, he said he had a box out of a mk1 van, but I've since been told that ideally it should be from the same model and year as my car? I spoke to my local vw specialist who said they would happily fit a second hand one for me (but obviously I'd pay their labour charges £40 an hour). but warned me that it might end up being worse than my existing box. So it might just be worth getting them to take it out and strip it to see exactly what is wrong, it might just be the speedo cable and the rest of the box might be fine, although that would be looking on the optomistic side!!

hmmmmmm.... just dont know  :undecided:
