ok, i thought long and hard about this and reached a verdict:

if you want the 170PS GT, spend the extra cash and instead get the GTI.

if you want the 140PS GT, get the golf sport model and that will save u some money. u dont get the flashy GT styling with the 140PS models anyway.

conclusion: dont buy a GT, unless you are keen on the styling and happy to be in between the sport and the GTI.

You can re map the TDI to near GTI figures but then you can  re map the GTI to STI figures.
Every one keeps going on about power but what about the handling? Take the styling, money factors, what spec etc etc etc, out of the equation. The GTI gives you thrills you don't get in the TDI.
Have you had a test drive yet?

Bored tonight so I took a speedo shot of my gt tdi 170 accelerating (on private land of course)- I think I could do with one of those DSG boxes!

.............and a petrol 2.0 litre petrol engine from the gti!, diesel starts well put just starts to get puffed out from 80mph....

Never seen a shot of a stock 2.0 GTi accerating so I cant compare it.

Best bet , look at youtube.com, look for golf gti videos and you will see someone has done the same as you will a golf gti dsg, 0-60 in 6 seconds dead,.there is a bid difference, gti pulls alot better.

how quick was my diesel then to 60?

just took a peek on there - there is some quick ones - the dsg ones seem much better
