I got a new GT TDi 170 as a company car - goes really well 0-60 about 8s and 45mpg,  especially mid range accleration and does give the GTis a run for their money - but, all said its NOT a proper GTi

The extra weight of the TDI engine means when your on one it under steers like a pig. That low down torque is great and most cars can't compeat with it. Again when your on one the lack of power higher up in the rev range is a pain in the ass. 75% of the time I was happy with my GT TDI. The GTI is special and I feel privileged every time I drive it. If cost is the biggest concern buy the TDI, other wise test drive them both and you will no what
GTI...

Just do it man

Horses for courses .... I got the GT Tdi when they first came out.

Great engine, massive torque & very flexible. Running costs are fantastic 45+ mpg cheap Road Tax (Went down to £110). Fun to drive. However and I only realised this when I picked up my new R32 - I bought the Tdi with my head, and I have never, never bought a car with my head before ..... and I will never again

Plus the V6 is soooo smooth

Depends what you are used to driving. I had a Mark 3 GTI 16v and I have to say the TDI 2 litre engine is great fun to drive and still has plenty of welly. Goes just as well if not better than my old car. Today some perp on the motorway was trying to box me in and I just cruised away...acceleration at 80mph plus is really sweet...and it is good at other speeds too. Fuel consumption is GR8. You can still get a good 50 to the gallon driving it hard...if you want to. Personally I like the lower emmissions and better fuel yet still wanted a fun car to drive. Aside from low speeds you can totally forget you are in a diesel....and guess what I got my insurance for £210 fully comp with discount protected. Car looks neat too. I did try the 1.9 TDI which was OK but takes a while for acceleration to kick in at around 50's...so I found the 2 litre much more fun...and no I don't envy the boy racers in their GTI's...infact I don't much like the look of the grill....looks too girlie for me and ruins the car...now the next one up...that looks cool but no way on the gas and price. Go for the TDI, have fun and feel smug too!

if you want to get a diesel, its pointless getting a GT golf. go for the sport model or the new match (replaces SE). still get loads of features, looks almost the same as a GT, will be more economical and cheaper, performance will be good enough.

my problem with the GT TDI is its too in between a GTI and the sport model. its not sure whether its a hot hatch or an economical lookalike.

We had a Diesel GTi and they are the nuts! They are torquey and lots of fun. I have no problem with them but then I do also have my toy.

Moral of the story is:  woman do cooking man do secret hunting trip

The plan.............

Get the GT TDI with all the frills and get it remapped to take it from 170BHP to 200 which would equal the GTI.

Accelaration would not be the same but that isn't so important to me.

Good idea?
