I am hoping to get a new mowta and was going to get a GT TDI 5 door for the following reasons:

Cost - cheaper than GTI
Fuel consumption - diesel better and cheaper in long term
Diesel engine indesctructible and would last forever
With remapping should be able to get PSI up to >200
Not too flash so as to be a boy racer crime victim
Dad works for VW dealership and can get discount on non-GTI non-R32 VW Golfs

Can anyone give me reasons why I should reconsider?  :undecided:

Would a GTI be better at resale and would I notice the petrol engine that much?

Thanks, hope this is the first of many posts

yes mate, go for the gti with dsg, get as many extras as poss for your money as you can , if u need bad things to know about the diesel versions, go to whatcar.co.uk and read customer feedbacks ref all the different golfs , alot of peeps saying gt versions are poor, rough running, rattly etc, general car togetherness being poor, and not one has a bad review about the gti 200 version, resale values hold better the gt diesel. performance, although fuel econamy around town is not the lightest on the pocket is the only poor ish thing i can think of

GTI all the way mate.

Had the same dilemma a couple of months back.  Took the GTi for a test drive and fell in love with it.  Maybe the insurance is steep and the mpg is pretty poor (depending on how you drive), but the GTi is an great car.  I luckily found one with the dsg gearbox, which I have to say is amazing.

Well, you have to weigh up you personal pros and cons but for me, i thought bout the last few cars i owned...

Mondeo Zetec-s tdci... because I wanted an ST220

Fiesta Zetec-s tdci...because I wanted a Fiesta ST

Both good cars...but not what i wanted. Always nearly, but quite.

I wanted a golf GTI...and I got 1!!!

If you can afford the running cost and enjoy the car i would say go for the GTI. If you do alot of miles and/ or worried about MPG get the TDI

Have a go in a GTI then a GT TDI, and make your decision, i think you will push the boat that bit further for the GTI.

Just got a GTI after having an Audi A4 diesel.  Yeah, you're right, the VAG diesels are pretty refined, and you get loads of mpg out of them.  But after 2 days of driving my GTI I just don't care that it's going to cost me twice as much in fuel!  The car is just great to drive.  Try them both out and you will see what I mean.  Just accelerating onto a motorway is fun!

Had same dilemma went for the GT TDI because of running costs. Good car but cost me more in the long run as traded it in for a GTI 9 months later. The extra grin is worth the extra £.
