My Golfs costing a fortune
« on: 26 September 2006, 23:36 »
Had a Gti 2.0 for a few months, its a 1999 v reg done 72,000 and its broke.

Started running very badly and exhaust gases smelling of fuel.

Into garage, read it with his computer, 4 faults. 2 Lamda sensors and 2 airflow meter faults.

Changed Lamda Sensors, £300, bugger.

Still ran a bit dodgy. Day later wouldnt start, strange morse code type noise from part where throttle cable connects to.

Garage changed Airflow meter, £75, ran perfect, never been better. until today one week later and its done the same again. Wont fire with strange noise from this box thing when ignition on.

Any thoughts?

One both occasions when not started wife had parked pointing it uphill, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

PS Anyone want to buy a slightly malfunctioning Golf GTI V reg, 72000 miles, full history tax and mot. 18in rims and cream leather interior.

does it smell of petrol when you take the oil cap off??

and is the ticking coming from somewhere on the drivers side of the engine??

if it is, clean out the oil breather pipe and try driving around again..

also, is there a build up of "cream cheese" in the oil cap??

doesnt mean a head failure straight out but a blocked breather pipe as said.

i'll find out about that ticking for you aswel, give me a day or so

ps, i'll have your cream leather if its going

The early 2.0's have a problem with the piston oil scraper rings (think vw put one in upside down) so you can get more lambda problems than other engines and drink a lot more oil. Is the cat still intack give it a tap with a hammer and listen for ratling. Is the starter motor engaging or not? if it is then could be leads, coil, plugs or wiring and might not show a fault.

as Gaz said its probably the canister ticking.... common  (and normal) by all accounts.. :undecided:

my mate in work had the same thing and vw told him it was the breather pipe for def, he cleaned it and all was well..
