Ecu Relay info
« on: 24 September 2006, 22:20 »
As my mk3 Vr6 is stuttering and stalling and many of you have the same probs ive read every thing about this fault and main cause seems to be ecu relay. Well read this today while sitting at the side of the road waiting for RAC man, hope it helps someone

This seems to be a common fault with the 2E Digifant engine, when the ECU relay fails, no fault codes plus high emissions are common symptoms. To check this, you need a diagnostic system that allows you to read the measuring blocks (main group 08) where the ECU voltage as seen by the ECU is displayed in display group03, display zone 04. If this voltage is highley erratic , fluctuating between 0 and ridiculous voltages such as 48 v then the ECU relay is faulty; it should read a steady 13.8 v, approx..

This fault seems to prevent the ECU from showing fault codes but when it is replaced, they miraculously appear from nowhere. Any codes present should be saved for future reference and then cleared.

The relay in question is located a position 3 on the fuse box ( top main row, 3rd from left) and has the control group No. 330 printed on the top.

The current VW part No is 165-906-381 and cost about £10

I hope this helps somebody

This problem is very common on Mk 3's and has had many threads written about it!

There is a SEARCH funtion on this forum but nobody uses it!

The easiest way to check your relays is drive the car until warm, stop and take out the relevant relay, if its warm then its fine - if cold then its knackered!!!

This is the precise problem I had when I joined here 2 years and 4 months ago!

So you can see why it frustrates people when it keeps popping up again and again!!!

I thought this forum was to help people, so the more info the better... Yes this topic keeps cropping up but not many have the answer..lots of ideas etc but no real answers.
Ive tried the search function and it didnt come up with the info i put on.
Why get fustrated, you dont have to read it.
Ive tried all ideas on bad running and changed loads so the more threads i read on this topic the better

I don't think len was having a dig at you and i certainley wasn't.

it is a bit annoying that at least 2 new people ask the same questions every week and we always answer.

i worry that newbies might think i'm a bit abrupt cos now i just put

coil

throttle body

ecu & fuel pump relay

(delete as applicable)

you made the effort to find out why it happens and for that i congratulate you.
