Golf gti 16 valve running super unleaded
« on: 24 September 2006, 11:23 »
Hi I'm new to the site and I have recently brought a 16 valver , it has had a gasflowed pack A head fitted by tsr with cams etc... The previous owner said to only run on super unleaded, is this right or not and what other things can I do to extract more power from the engine that won't cost the earth as she booked in for a respray next year. This was the one previously owned by wrexham16v.

If you have a look inside the petrol cap it states that the minimum RON to be used - 98.
Up until recently my local petrol station had Super unleaded which was only 97 RON, so i've always used normal unleaded - 95 RON. Its a bit split on here really as to which is better. Technically the higher the RON rating then the better the fuel will burn.

However, i've tried 95, 97 and the more recent 99 RON fuel and to be perfectly honest I didn't notice any difference (apart from the price!!!). Similar MPG and power.

Mine is a digifant which is an electronic injection and apparently advances and retards the spark according to the fuel you use. Yours is a K-jet  and will not advance and retard as it is a mechanical injection. If the guy said use the super unleaded then I assume its set up for that fuel. You could try normal and see what happens??
<br />Almost finished.....

I have had two 8valves in the past and I have run both of these on normal unleaded, without any problems the later one had a rally cam which made a particulary pleasent noise especially with the piper zorst on it. But the 16valve is the first one I have had, and if it wasn't for the engine mods then I would try normal unleaded. The guy previous to me spent a substancial amount of money on her and I wouldn't want to undo all that work. Cheers.

Higher up the revs you might notice a difference, but to be honest, I tried both in my 16v digi and really notice a difference besides my wallet being lighter.

With it being a 16v it won't automatically adjust itself, so if its been set up on higher octane stuff then you should keep to that.
