Engine swap

Hey new here.

Am currently looking for a new car have been looking at mk1's but for a half decent one people want too much. so am looking at a mk2 but i wanna engine swap on which ever golf i buy does n e 1 know what conversion could happen in a mk2 and give good power 220bhp+?
My mate has a mk 1 with an audi coupe 2ltr 16v engine running 183 on the rollers without the 75horse of nos! Gotta keep up!!
And does n e 1 know the weight of the mk2 gtis in comparison to the mk1 gtis.

I think Mk2's are about 150kg more than Mk1's.

Your best bet is to go and get a G60 Golf, however your only option will be lhd. You can get 220 bhp with stage 4 charger and piper cams, maybe a little more if you look at going out to 1.9, flowing the head and spending ?800 on specialist exhaust and mainfold.

Guidline price for a G60 Golf is likely to be ?4k with some engine work carried out dependent on spec and condition.

not wanting to knock what 'rustynuts' has said but theres always the option of the mk4 engine the 1.8t which is 150/180 bhp pending on which transplant, then with remapping you can hit 200bhp easily just a thought as this seems to be the modern way of engine swaps compared with the g60 unIT (HEY NOT KNOCKING g60 IN ANY WAY OR FORM)just putting forward what ive read/seen on more costworthy engine tranplants that are reliable from the 'box'

Put the VR6 lump in it! By far the best mk2 engine conversion! I have seen 2 of these now and they are breathtaking! Tis what i am aspiring to!

The power to weight is amazing and it is such a reliable solid engine, delivers oodles of torque over the G60 and although on paper the g60 is quicker in the car i assure you this is not the case!

The g60 is blinding - and by far my fav GTI but the engine is a b!tch to maintain and the supercharger is unreliable unless really looked after. The vr6 you can just punish and it will come back asking for more!!!

Get a solid mk2 and get the best VR6 lump you can find - you will not be disapointed! When i was last looking through the adds in the back of "The Golf" magazine i noticed alot of mk2 vr6's for sale so it's obviously becomming a popular conversion!

Although a bit heavy for the MK2. When I was looking for a MK2 last summer I drove 2 with VR6's in them. One a mate had and one that was for sale. Lot's of poser put th added weight made both understeer like mad and the front ends felt bouncy. I don't really know how much the difference in weight between the VR and say a 1.8t is but it feels like alot. VR's are a great engine in the MK3 and up golfs and Corrado's but definatly drive a mk2 with one in it before you build one.

When you do a VR6 conversion loadsa people cut corners and don't get 'special order' uprated springs to cope with the extra weight - you need a higher spring rate than anything out the box will give you to help with the problems like understeer etc ....

Rather than a complete swap why not build an engine ??

As long as you do you homework a 2000cc bottom end on a 16v head - cams and Webers will easily see 200bhp and have room for more when your ready !!

In days gone by i 'fettled' with numerous (no laughing and was young and poor !) Ford's with similar set-ups and have sooooo much fun, i'd have the induction roar of a set of DCOE 45's screaming at 8 grand over a turbo any day!

U really have to look at your bugdet and how the car will actually be used before making any decisions ... make sure the end result is something you can live with.

i like the idea of the 1.8 20valve turbo i reckon??

I like the idea of a modern engine should look good in the bay and also hopefully provide some decent reliability.
