Stolen VIN plate

Hi everybody, been a while since i was here last, had a shock tonight checking under the bonnet of my car, it looks like someones stolen the VIN plate off of the car, that thing definately wasnt loose!  the cars been sat outside the house for almost 2 months now due to engine problems, long story! anyways just wondering if anyone knows what i should do, should this be reported to the police? worried from stories that people can get new keys for the car with the number or re-use the identity for nefarious means! anyone got experience of this sort of situ?

i would report it.  someones just taken your cars identity..  the word clone springs to mind.  this is normally done when a car is scrapped.  steal one the same and put the vin on the stolen car.  one issue though is that you have the log book...

no up near the ECU, small black plate riveted to inside of wing. its probably covered in 15yrs worth of grime also

VIN No is located on inner wing, next to drivers side bonnet hinge..
Its possible that the pop rivets have corroded, and the plate has dropped down into the gap at the rear of the inner wing.. ally corrodes badly, especially on a car that has been standing out for so long
Might be worth contacting DVLA, to see if anyone has applied for a duplicate log book, with your chassis No...
Also, check that chassis No on your log book matches the No on the paper sticker on your boot floor/inner rear panel, and also the hidden No under the plastic cover on the center of the bulkhead up near the wiper mech' (Under bonnet) to make sure you've not got the ringer!!

Right just thought id update everyone, thanks for your replies, been away last few days so hadn't had chance to respond, by reading all the posts i have to hold my hands up and admit i seem to have made a big mistake, i always thought the VIN was on that plate next to the one about the throttle body near the bonnet catch on the slam panel, i checked up by the drivers side hinge and the riveted plate is there so thanks guys, and sorry about the mistake! can anyone tell me what the plate thats missing was? i know it had a long code on it and also had a few other details on it, all in german if i remember correctly! thanks again guys!      Just had a thought: while i was updating i might as well ask if anyone has any recommendations about fixing up the engine, havent the cash at the moment to do it hence the gti is going into storage, but definately gonna get her back onto the road as soon as i can, at the moment the engine itself has a skimmed and rebuilt cylinder head after the head gasket needed doing, but i dont know what happened to it after that as when i picked up the car and drove home, halfway home the oil light came on and the buzzer sounded, checked the oil, slightly below max so topped up just enough to be on max, light out, buzzer off, drove home, engine sounded a little rough but thought it would take a while to loosen up, didnt drive her hard at all, got home fine..... took the gf out, drove about 14 miles, absolutely fine, drove home, problems started, stalling, oil light, buzzer as nearing home, got home, stopped, booked into garage next morning, start up car next morning, took a few attempts, started, reversed up road and the oil filter blew off dumping entire load of oil down road, after that i had it towed to the garage and they told me that all the bearings had gone! pissed off really, dont know whether to think the garage cocked something up or not, doesnt help that owner is a family friend! anyways does anyone know a good place that could fit a reconditioned bottom end and check over the cylinder head? sorry for the long post, thought i might as well fill everyone in while im here! cheers
