MK4 Knocking Exhaust
« on: 19 September 2006, 13:19 »
Seems my MK4 has developed a knock/rattle coming from the exhaust hitting underneath, somewhere around the centre console area. Just read in the common faults section that the front exhaust mountings tend to snap. Does anyone else think this is what my problem is? and if so is it an easy job to fix?
Havnt looked underneath yet but thought I would post first.
Any help people would be greatly appriciated

I can tell you it will be the bracket on tyour centre box, you will need to get it on a ramp and it can be resecured with a big jubliee clip, if you cant do that then you need a new centre box, think they are about £100

Does it only happen at certain revs or is it when you go over bumps etc?  Only mention this because a heat shield came loose on mine a couple of weeks ago which caused an alarming vibration noise at certain revs and it was coming from somewhere below the handbrake/gear lever.  Should be easy to sort if it is.

sorry to hijack but the last few times I've started mine up there is a slight knocking coming from the rear which kind of sounds like the exhast hitting something but then thats it - it only happens at startup.  Serviced last month and they changed the fuel filter - could this be loose or something?

thanks
