Newbie with a couple of questions
« on: 17 September 2006, 13:24 »
Hi there, newbie to the forum but long tme golf GTI owners.

Picked up a Mk5 GTI in Steel Grey yesterday and have two questions. The car came from Denmark as a UK spec through All Brands New in Hull.
Checked the car over - signed for it and took it. However since getting it home weve noticed two things:

There is a small mark on one of the wheels where water seems to have got under the laquer. The mark is small and at the minute perfectly smooth, there is no scratch so we cannot be blamed for damaging it. And I don't know how I missed it but the same wheel has a different tyre on tham the other 3! It has a Bridgestone whilst the other three are Dunlops. Do you think our local dealer with be willing to deal with this. I guess the wheel could be a waranty issue (it has a full 2 year VW waranty on it).

Secondly - we can't turn the headlight off  Whenever you put the ignition on the lights are on as well. In the sunlight on the 'automatic setting' they are on and even when you turn the lights to 'off' they stay on. Is this a European thing because the car came from Denmark? If it is can the ECU (or whatever controls this) be reprogrammed to allows us to turn them off when we don't want them on?

Chhers all

Hi,

Not sure bout the headlights, but isnt that the "follow mw home" feature, where the headlights stay on for a few mins to light your way to your door?

Just picked mine up today and havnt read the manual yet!!!

as its under warranty the dealer should sort out the wheel for you. as for the tyres someone else had that happen to them but am not sure what the outcome was.

as for the lights when you go down to the dealership ask them if they can shed any light on the situation for you, pun not intended. it might be something as simple reprogramming it.

Wheel and trye I don't know about but the get you home auto lights are one "click" clockwise on the light selector, it should go (from l to r) off - auto - side - main, the lights do come on in a dark place whenever you unlock it but they should go off unless they are in auto mode in which case they'll come on when the car thinks it's dark enough or if you hit around 90 Mph.............err so I've been told. Anyway if the light switch is all the way to the left (off) and they are still coming on my moneys on a Euro programming thing, I'm sure the dealer will be able to sort it though.

Good luck
The car in front is a Toyota............but only whilst I change down a gear!!

Cheers Guys

Defo not the coming home feature. That does work properly, but once you're in the car with the ignition on you have to have lights whether you like it or not even when the switch is all the way to the left (off).

I'm hoping they will sort the wheel out as it looks OK at the minute but if it starts to lift on the main part of the wheel it will look awful and I'm guessing refurbishing isn't going to easy or cheap.
Tyre completlely baffles me

I'll keep you posted on the outcome, probably take it to the dealers on Wednesday.

Had my car three days now, Tornado Red and I have exactly the same problem with the lights, just can't get them to go off once ignition is on!

Whilst you ordered a UK spec car, it might be of interest for you to know that it is a legal requirement in denmark to drive with dipped beam headlights on at all times.

Could shed some light on the problem

Good point - im wondering whether the fact that you have a different tyre on a wheel that isnt perfect may indicate that someone else swapped your wheel at the dealer say when another customer complained about it...

Good luck with taking it up with them

Got my car from motorpoint a couple of weeks ago.... Still can't work the light thing out. Mine was imported from Holland.

Any help on the lights situation would be appreciated.

Have talked to our local dealer about the lights - it is a Euro thing. Apparently it's a 20min job to reprogramme them to standard spec. They also say they will look at the wheel as a possible warranty job.

Called the supplier in Hull and they said they will get back to us re the odd tyre. Not sure what they're going to do but I'm convnced it's been swapped from another car. The spot where the blemish is is so small that I reckon that our car had a damaged wheel and they replaced it with the one we have now. It's very easy to miss. It also had a plastic valve cap rather than a metal one - but we made them replace that  :smug:
