Hello everyone.... problems problems problems....... I know there are other people with similar problems to this on this forum
I recently bought a 92 Golf MK3 GTi on a "AS IS" basis so I'm stuck with it.
Love my Dubs though so I'm looking to solve a problem which is **** me off
at the moment. Here it is......
Go to my car first thing in the morning, afternoon or evening ( cold
starting it ) and it starts after a few swings of the starter. Drive it
around for a bit, stop the car, try to start it again.... and all it does
is swing swing swing..... won't start at all. I can smell the petrol though
so I think its pushing petrol through? I've checked the sparks, leads, rotor
arm & distributor and I'm no mechanic but they look fine to me? (
distributor looks like it was just fitted and I have a receipt from the
previous owner showing that the sparks and leads were replaced in early
August ). The sparks look quite black on inspection though but they are
definitely sparking. Does this also mean that the system is running "rich"?
But anyways.... after all this inspection.... I still can't get it to
start? If I wait a while though ( not sure how many minutes or hours ) it
will start though.... eventually.... is this possibly something I could
look into fixing myself or would I have to get
a pro to look at it? When I do get the car going eventually.... it runs as it should?
Another question as well... the tops that usually screw onto the spark plugs.... are they supposed to be on the stuck inside the Leads? I know on other cars I have seen this was not the case.... was just wondering if thiscar is like a special case or something?
Also.... on the airbox... the air sensor box ontop o this.... does anyone know what the resistance over the these points ( on the plug ) should be?
another point I thought I would add in..... took one of the spark plugs out and held my finger over the hole while cranking the engine... and there is definitely compression there.
Thanks in advance for ANY HELP?!?!?
By the way.... im new to the whole tinkering with cars thing so details would really help me
