gti 16v acceleration
« on: 13 September 2006, 01:03 »
Hey guys help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recently purchased a 95 gti 16v, in higher revs its shifts , but the pick up is not as good ie in lower revs. for example off the lights im getting beat by standard 1.8 golfs........
Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but its a japanese import and most of the garages wont touch it...... someone told me it may need tuning but japenese cars maybe detuned compared to uk specs, is this true? any ideas how i can put the kick back into the beast?????

I have a 1995 16v. I think that is what the 16v's are like. Mine has no pick up until in the higher rev range, once past 5000 though it is rapid!!! Anyone else think the same as me? Or is there something wrong with my car too?

Try a couple of tanks of V-Power from shell in your tank.......my 16v doesnt seem slow off the lights but it does really pick up about 4rpm.....and the V-Power helps...also there was a guy who had a 16v on this forum who was in new zealand and he said his car was detuned, think he said 140bhp where as uk spec 150bhp standard, mines has a powerflow cat back zorst which also helps

I felt the same when I bought mine. It does nothing at lower revs. But the 16v can leave a lot of standard cars behind above 4-4500. 2nd is particular nice if you hold it to the red line! Sounds good too

16v's are pretty useless below 4.5k tbh...I've got the mk3 2ltr in my mk2 and it still doesn't feel great below that. Shifts when it comes on cam though

If it feels that bad then get it to a reputable VW specialist who can check it out properly for you.
08.03.10 - 3, maybe 4 weeks, and I want my golf back on the road!

valvers (and vr6's) also have that EDL stuff (a crude anti lock system) that holds them back under acceleration.. see how your car behaves around the 25 mph mark to see what i mean..
Used to have a '97 MK3 16v GTI 3dr in 'Black Magic'... now have a '55 Civic Type-S...

They are useless around that speed. Any more details? Haven't heard of this. Sounds a bit like TC but I know it hasn't got that

I think it's simply tied into the ABS system, so it simply applies brakes to the front wheels to eliminate/reduce wheelspin (rather than limiting power like a true TC system)..

Nice. I'd say reduce, not eliminate!
