Paranoid?
« on: 11 September 2006, 13:17 »
Am I being paranoid?

When waiting in traffic (lights jams etc) I feel really uneasy in my car. It never seems to have a constant humm if you know what I mean? Sounds as if the revs are dropping slightly, then going back up. Is this normal. The revs are usually around 1000 when idling, but today I noticed they were stightly higher than normal. Like 1200-1300? I've been told the idle screw is loose. Is this what is causing it? Is it an easy job to sort? Is it just a matter of tightening it back up or does it need adjusting back to normal again by a proper mechanic? Any help or advice greatly appreciated. I love driving my car but recently I've just been feeling nervous the whole time

Thanks,
G

067 133 432 A - adjusting screw - £9,87
Easy job to replace, unwind the old one and wind in the new one about the same, then adjust it till your idle is at about 900 :)

Once I finished the 2.0 conversion mine unwound itself every 2 days cos of the sheer power

Edit: You live anywhere near Bracknell?  I could get my CO meter & timing light on it for you, it would be nice to get a look at a running MK1 to help us when we get round to fitting the engine to our cabby!

Are you still running your engine in? if so it will be set up to run rich, the tickover needs to go up a bit to compensate for this or it would keep cutting out, the rev's dropping up and down are a side effect (& loss of power but you shouldn't notice that whilst running in anyway )  -  they'll re-tune it when it gets its first service and it should be back to what your used to - but smoother & quieter

EDIT: I hated the way mine ran whilst running-in so bad that I went round the M25 just to speed up the process

Thats well funny!

I do 32 miles in mine every day and already done 500miles since engine rebuild so shouldn't take long. So should I get it serviced when I reach the 1000 mile mark? And ask them to sort the idle thing out at the same time or is that part of the service? It won't matter if I take it to another garage will it?

Cheers,

Sure am :)
Wont be taking the cabby tho since it still doesn't have an engine

Mine also has an uneven idle sometimes, I discovered an air leak in my inlet which I think is the cause of it though!
