Fuel Debate goes on!!!

Lots been said about super and normal leaded with super being better for the GTi but it will work on normal.  Used super unleaded for first time and I'm sure I'm getting better mpg or I may be just driving like Miss Daisy!!!  Anyone noticed better mpg using super??  Will my wallet be better off

If you are going to spend £21k+ on a new GTI, I think it should be given the fuel it was designed for.  Otherwise you risk long term damage to the engine - through pinking - and don't really experience the full capabilities of the car.  Plus, your mpg will be lower so you might not save money anyway!    My GTI has only ever had Optimax - and now V-Power.

After reading a comparative test between all the high octane petrols, I use Tesco 99, it came out second in the test to shell by a very small marging and finished ahead of other leading brands. I've run my GTI back to back between V power and Tesco and notice no difference at all, apart from in my pocket!!

Tesco 99 RON has been downgraded to 98 or 97 RON so I've heard... I never put it in my GTI although I can't see why a Mk5 GTI wouldn't run ok on it.  However, no one in their right mind should put 95 Ron 'normal' unleaded in the tank

I can't believe that Tesco would down grade their 99 fuel to either 97 or 98 and still advertise it as 99, because that would get them into a whole load of trouble. I noticed the difference in my motor when I upgraded from 97 to 99, and would notice the difference if the fuel had gone back to 97. I agree with you though that putting 95 in to a high performance motor which specifically states 97 or above needed if pretty stupid, what's the point in having a top motor with a sweet engine if you're going to feed it inferior fuel, that's like feeding a supermodel nothing but big macs and still expecting her to be a top piece of a$$!!

Always ran my Boxster on Optimax and got an extra 3mpg. New GTi will only get the V-Power treatment.

what ron level is BP Ultimate?  97 or 98 ron? if it's 97 - it is just better to fill up at tesco's if they supply 98 ron ?

thing is there's seems to be more bp and supermarket petrol stations than shell ones!
