which gearbox
« on: 05 September 2006, 11:19 »
Hi dudes,
not been on here for a while cuz been away.
just finished my 2.0l conversion on my mk2 8v but b4 i swap it i need to give the gear box some thought.
i changed all the linkage bushes and replaced the clutch and now i cant select reverse without it crunching really badly and going down the gears 2nd to 1st is really hard to find.
my question is:> do i need a replacement box and if so which box is best to fit to the conversion cuz i'm not too happy about how high the revs are at 100 mph is there another box with a longer rev range that i can fit. has anyone tried a different box.
cheers guys

Use a reconded 16v box, they have slightly longer high gear ratios, should be better for motorway driving.

Did you use an alignment tool?

Use an 8v box, code ACD.

The ratios are not much different and AFAIK the final drives are all the same across the board, as they are all economy drives, being a valver it will rev high anyway, and thats what it likes, the only boxes that have a longer drive is the driver boxes i think.

Either way what ever gti box the final drives are all relative, and you will be reving close to 4.5-5k at 100.

Yup 8v ACD box is the one to go for as it has a taller 5th for nice cruising, apart from that the ratios are identical to the 16v 2y box.
I've actually got a 16v 2y gearbox on my 2.0 8v conversion and its fine on the motorway, not really alot in it compared to the old 8v box!
The only thing to remember is the 8v & 16v boxes have different sized input shaft splines so you need to get the right friction disc to go with it.

First thing you should do though is have a fiddle with the alignment, it just sounds like it needs a wee bit of adjustment is all.  Did you do the gearlever housing under the car as well as the linkage bushes in the engine bay?
