water in the fuel.....contact of old posts ?
« on: 04 September 2006, 20:16 »
im new to the site and have a 1991 gti cab
had a rusted filler neck (which seems the norm)
when drained there was water in the petrol so had the fuel pump replaced (as advised by the garage)
now the car will not start tho if started by the manifold it will turn over so petrol is pumping thru ok.
however it now will not start thru the ignition and two garages cannot find the prob. (only local grease monkeys tho).
any help or previous experiences will be great.

saw an old post on this how do i respond  (last years post.....)

many tks for any help

More than likely there are small rust particles from the filler neck in the injection system so these may need to be flushed out of the injectors. Change the fuel pump, fuel filter and check that the fuel pump is priming (you should hear a whurring sound, just in front of the back wheels), although with some fuel relays you don't hear it priming.  :undecided:

I notice you've posted in the mk2 section, you've got a mk1 so post in here or the garage section otherwise you may get confused. For the record yours will be a k-jet engine so you don't have an ECU. The fuel relay will be the one that's in the top left hand corner of the fuse box, although it may not necessarily be in the top left hand slot (if you catch my drift), it's quite big compared to the other relays and has five prongs. GSF sell them for about £20.

Check around this site for some good information.  http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~kaw5/electrical.htm

hmmm... Check your injectors. They may be full of junk.
No DuB should die.

Had the very same problem with my cabby, sorry to say but new injectors were needed, no cheap at £30+vat each. new filler neck again has to be the most expensive about £100(different to mk1 tintops)

Drain the tank through the lift pump hole under the back seats, clean the metering head and fuel lines with an airline(blow air through all of the fuel ways), clean the main pump and the lift pump thoroughly. This did the trick for my car.

hope this helps

ps. you can not clean the injectors(after they have had water through them), anyway the should be replaced at about 80k.
