Speakers, I know its been asked before but....
« on: 03 September 2006, 17:15 »
at present, I have std. 6*4 in the back, non in the dash, papery type ones in the door pockets and some alpine tweeters screwed to the inner wing mirror covers (there when I bought it)

I also have a 10'' sub in the boot, powered by a lightning audio amp, bridged to powered the sub.

I want to do away with the sub in the boot and also the alpine tweeters.

so what is generally recommended to go in the dash, the doors and the rear, keeping everything factory fit, I don't want 6*9 in the shelf.

I listen to a wide variety of tunes, from house, to rock to pop and everything in between. I don't listen that loud. I have a Sony MP40 CD/MP3 HU 4*45watt I think.

I've asked in this section cos I'd appreciated all you mk 2 owners opinions!

Cheers folks!

I like the idea of keeping it looking OE but you will lose a lot of bass response compared to your current setup.

Best bet is some co-axials in the dash (i have infinitys that work well), a good quality mid range component in your door pocket (i don't have one of these so not sure of a good one - this is an important speaker as is where all of your bass will be coming from so check out the frequency responses for the different models and get the bassiest ie. lowest Hz), and some reasonable 6x4's just to uprate it a bit for the rear passengers (i have JBL's).

Unless you keep the sub or upgrade the door pockets to 17cm you really won't get a lot of bottom end anymore.

Thats my two pence worth anyway, hope its useful!

Id get a set of component speakers for the doors/dash, a smaller amp to power them, keep the sub and loose the 6x4s. The will drag the sound stage back so you wont get the best of the sound. But thats me and Im selfish. I spend the most tim in my car and I want to hear it at its best. I have some average speakers in the back of mine just incase Im carrying passengers I dont want to talk to or that are moaning about how basy it is but most the time they are firmly turned off! Just because you have a sub doesnt mean you have to play it loud, it will improve the bass output which tends to get lost with road noise etc while driving especially at low volumes.

How you set it up is up to you but thats how I have mine and my reasons. Hope it helps.

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

of all the replies Mr Veedub8v has got to be the most useful

Anyway - do you reckon I should keep the sub? should I relocate the the alpine tweeters to the under dash bit, and get some decent components for the doors? the alpines have a crossover built into their wiring if that helps?
I just need them moved from their current location!
I've no major need to dump the sub, as I can easily take it out if I need to carry anything major!

cheers

keep the sub for sure. Makes such a difference. If you buy a set of new components they will have crossovers and be balanced properly between the tweeters and mid range. thats the way Id go about it

Thats that bit sorted then! What about the components for the front then?
are these a set of tweeters (for the dash) and mids for the doors?

can you recommend a (cheap!) set?

Do I need another amp for these? Or will the HU be OK to power them?

i cant recommend a cheap set, but i think infinity do some good ones around 100quid. In general you'll get what you pay for but they will certainly do the trick. I would get a small ish amp, maybe similar to the one powering your sub so the balance is similar, put it inder the passenger seat and power them from there. They will be ok off the HU but the quality will be so much better off an individual amp. Think of it as an old mini doin 80 miles an hour for 80 miles or a farrari. the extra power will make the journey a lot more comfortable!

nice analogy!

I'll prob get the components first, see how it goes then upgrade to an amp if I think it will be better!
