clutch problems
« on: 02 September 2006, 13:47 »
Hey everyone, on my mkII 8v I occasionally get some clutch slap when slow maneourvering, and sometimes I get judder at biting point. The car stalls if u let clutch out in any of the forward gears at rest and theres no slip under load at all, even 5th from 20mph up hill.

Dont think the clutch plate is too worn, no release bearing noises at all and the previous owner says he changed the cable, but mayb this is fitted incorrectly/not adjusted, bite is at the top of the pedal travel but it doesn't feel like it won't engage and it is a strong bite.

Any ideas? Clutch pedal is also a little higher than the brake pedal if that helps, are there any known issues or adjustments I can make, am fairly well mechanically minded and have a vw technician friend.

Cheers guys.

is it a standard or self-adjusting clutch cable fitted? most people do away with the self-adjusting cables in favour of a standard item

also, the clutch pedal stop has came of the top of the pedal box this is causing it to sit a bit higher than the brake pedal. if you take of the underside tray you will see what im on about. u can either get a new stop from VAG or GSF or else stick a bolt with 2 nuts through the hole at the top of teh pedal box and adjust it yourself

think its a self adjuster, theres no adjustment on the cable itself, will check the stop on the pedal box, with it biting ok would u say its prob the cable and not the clutch itself or is it worth budgeting for one?

Is the cable change an easy job or are there any pitfalls/workarounds that may help me?

Which standard cable do u recommend is it from another vag model?

Cheers,

Matt.
