Help: 1999 Golf 1.8 T GTI 3DR
« on: 31 August 2006, 21:43 »
Hello All,
I just got this car and have a few problems/questions if anyone can answer them it would be great.

Driver Heated Seat is not working but passenger is, can this be fixed cheaply? are there any common problems? could it be something as simple as a fuse?

Turbo:
How do you know when this kicks in? the engine is so quiet I haven't noticed it kick in should I notice a difference in engine noise? I mean the car is fast but I'm not sure the turbo is working. Would the car not drive if the turbo had gone?

Windows:
My N/S (passenger Side) window is very slow to go up, is this the dreaded window regulator problem emerging and should I fix now rather than later?

Also the windows don't stop when hitting something when closing they just procede to push further, I was under the impression it should go down if its obstructed?

Also a firends golf (same model) windows open when unlocking the car if he holds the open button on the remote, however mine does not. Is the a feature which can be turned on and off? Might it have something to do with the windows notstopping when they hit something when closing? I do know the O/S/F regulator has been changed, maybe they did something wrong?

I have more questions but if anyone could answer some of these first it would be a great help.

Thank you

Hi i'l help as much as i can
Drivers seat check the connection or the switch as i think both wouldnt work if it was fuse/relay.
Turbo, you should notice a nice mid range torque. if you rev it with some one under the bonnet you should be able to hear it spin. if it was busted you'd probably see black smoke or oil around the turbo.
Windows, inspect as soon as possible as if it drops when you dont expect it you got to worry about black bags, duck tape and rain. Its pretty easy to replace (see top threads on replacement) if you buy the kit with the galvanised panel instead of just the replacement clips and costs £70.
Not sure about the auto undo windows my mk3 golf had this feature but my mk4 doesnt might be able to use vagcom to opperate it.

VAG COM won't be able to do it

the auto window feature you need an alientech module which you fit to the car.  though someone on the ukMKIV forum has found something else but hasn't been confirmed if it works yet.

Hi i'l help as much as i can
Drivers seat check the connection or the switch as i think both wouldnt work if it was fuse/relay.

Where to start looking? I don't even know where the fuse box is lol. Had a feel around under the chair, felt some wires couldn't gain access to anything tho :(

I thought the Window thing would of been an add on feature with the remote key. However I wonder why the windows don't stop when you obstruct them like they are supposed to do ??

I rang VW to see if they could fix a few simple things and they are coming back with a quote going to be expensive tho I think.

Any of you guys know how I can do this cheaper?

The grab handle to move the drivers seat up to gain access to the back seats works but not very well and the handle comes off in your hand. You can push it back in but can a cheap handle be found and replaced?

The parcel shelf on the drivers side has its cord to go up with the boot, but the hook on the boot door isn't there, where would I get a similar one from to fix myself?

The small compartment just behind the handbrake is broken, this is called the rear can/cup holder I think. Can I get another somewhere cheap? where would I find the part number for this to even start looking?

My GTi doesn't have a GTi badge on the front grill, did they not come as standard on the grills? can i add one and where from?

I know these are all very simple questions but when you don't know where to go besides halfords or VW who will charge over the top its hard to find out these things.

I live near Birmingham so if anyone knows of any cheap parts or dealers that would be great. Any help appreciated, thanks to the guys who have replied already

VW didnt even call me back with a quote like they said they would. However he wanted £109 to start off with to inspect the car to see what would need replaced/fixing :(

Any links spare part places near Brum or places that will do these little things for not a fortune like VW?

For the parts you mentioned I would try a local breakers yard or E-bay.

Only the Anniversery (180bhp) Mk4's came with the GTI badge on the grille, but again, get one off E-bay for around £12.00 and they clip straight on.

The fuse box is located on the right hand side of your dash board behind a flap (only accessable when you open the door)

Hope this helps a bit

You should be able to hear the turbo wistle slightly, find a quiet road in second gear from slow hit the gas with a window open, i thought the same the power is soooooo smooth to other turbos i have been in but yer it's there.
Maybe is so quiet because the 150bhp turbo is detuned (little boost) get it re-mapped to about 180-190 bhp and you will hear it lol
