Starting problem
« on: 30 August 2006, 10:16 »
Had my car for a good 7-8months now, have been somewhat lucky with having none of the known issues with the Mk3 Golf happen to me *touch wood*. Has always turned over first time every time, never stalled, nothing...Until yesterday!

Now I get in the car having already driven it earlier in the day, come to start it and it turned... turned some more... then it caught and spluttered to a complete stop! So turned it over again... Same thing... turned... turned... caught and spluttered to a stop as if there is no fuel. So I pop the bonnet, check all the leads are on tight to dizzie, coil etc.. all fine.. see if there is any water/damp anywhere on the ignition system (as done nothing but rain for days), all seems fine. So I leave it a minute or two and it then turns over first time. All be it a little bit noisy (startmotor noise I'm presuming) and car was fine for rest of the day after that.. Now haven't tried it this morning yet!  so I'm assuming all will be ok.

So just wondering if anyone has any idea what caused it? If anything is on the way out? Starter has been a bit noisy past few days, wouldn't say really noisy but there is a faint noise once the engine has fired which goes when you disengage the starter.

Any pointers would be appreciated? At the time I just assumed damp in the ignition system somewhere, but it was definatley like there was no fuel getting through hence the spluttered to a stop.

So any ideas....?

1st thing to do is replace the ECU temp sender, I think on yours its a 4 pin jobber and will cost you £35 from VW.

Ah the infamous blue sender problem right? That's the one on the front of the block?

Having read up on the problems it does somewhat link to that, cold engine, cold day... engine is tricked into thinking it's hot so doesn't supply enough fuel to start from cold. Thanks for that headsup rubjonny... I'll go track one down and see if it puts it right, never had the problem before you see so guess it could be on the way out.

Yup!! And no-doubt they would have issued a newer one again costing more! Pretty much like they did with the breather hoses!
