Guides on Fitting new suspension to Mk1 ???
« on: 29 August 2006, 15:27 »
Hi Folks,

I am soon to tackle swapping both front and rear struts/shocks as well as lower firmer springs onto my Mk1 Cab. I will read up in the manual before starting the job and hear its relatively easy.

But before I start has anyone got any experience they can share on this matter as every little helps! I have found a guide to replacing rear shocks but nothing on fitting struts?

All comments and sugestions most welcome...???

make sure you get a spring compressor, apart from that there isn't much to worry about apart from the top nuts!  You have to hold the strut still with an allen key while you try to loosen the nut, it can be a total nightmare!

I had to get a windy gun on one of mine in the end, I'd advise you to pop it into your local garage and hand them £5 to crack the bolts loose for you, then nip em up and take it home to finish the swap.

I dont mind a bit of brute force myself! Will have a go and see how I get on. My problem is I am too heavy handed and tend to break things!

I also have complete front struts with springs so reckon no need for spring compressor as I am just swaping the whole thing over? This could also save me hassle with the allen key tip you pointed out?

Also been informed of the camber issues. Handy tip is to cut a guide that fits snug between the rim and strut. Then refit the new strut with it hard up against your made up jig/guide. Provided camber was sweet at the start you should be pretty darned close!

I am led to belive the front swap is just four bolts and the rear is a misely two. I reckon even I cant break that!!

Thanks for the tips mate.

Ah if you have the complete setup then no need for compressors, but you still need to get the top nut off!
