How wide should i go .
« on: 28 August 2006, 11:08 »
I'm doing up my 16v over the winter & have decided to refurb a set of BBS RM alloys .
I have both the standard 0.5" outers & a set of 1.5" outers (poss for sale ).
I love the pictures of golfs on wide RMs & was wondering which of the two following sizes of outers
to go for .
2" outers for 8" wide wheels
2.5" outers for 8.5" wide wheels .
195/45/15 rubber.
I need to be able to drive my car everyday but would like it too look super cool as well.
What work would i need to do to get the wheels to fit without rubbing .
Please help me come to the right decision .

Oh yeh , id like to keep the standard arches.

Hmmm It depends on how low the car is, and what the offset of the wheels is, but my guess is you are going to need arch mods even with the 8J width

I dont mind getting the arches rolled & later on i will be getting a fully adjustable FK suspension set up.

Ive  heard u need to get the arches pushed out a little to get the 8.5" RMs to fit without rubbing.

Any body got any idea how much this would cost & where in the midlands i can get this done ???

Anybody out there got the 2.5" outers on there RMs ,what issues have u had .

Any pics with mk2s with 8.5" RMs

good luck with them - I've had most of my arches removed to get 7'' wheels in! It is lowered but even so, its going to be major work!

Well, my g60 is running 8J (I think, need to measure!) and the arches have been cut slightly and seam welded. The G60 front arches (back too?) have a bit more clearance anyway. I'd go for getting the arches pulled mate. Much tidier.

Organisys, what do you mean pulled ??
Does this involve pushing the whole arches & surrounding  panel flared out .

I've got 7inch wheels on my mk2 that has standard arches and they rub with fat mates in the back or when I'm slamming it round a corner at speed so you'll defo need to get your arches rolled...

Same as golf GIT - I've got 225 tyres on mine with a 40mm lowered kit. Gonna need new tyres soon as they are getting chewed by the rivets that hold the plastic trim on the wheel arches

I'm either going to put smaller tire's on next time or get the arches rolled. I might get away with 215s. :undecided:

I could always refuse to give the fat boys a lift
