i don't mean to seem like an arogant cock or anything, but

If you are wanting about 120bhp, why didn't you just get a GTi in the firts place :undecided:

Believe me lofty i'd love too. There are a few reasons why i havn't. I was desperate for a golf and preferably one that already looked and sounded quite nice as im saving money to go travelling at the moment so didnt want to spend much on mods. The one i found is beautiful and i had a huge grin on my face for the first week i had it, the grin is now a moderately sized one. The car was only 800 and im payin 900 for insurance. Insurance on a gti would be a bit too much and dont think i would find one that looked this good for the same money. i figure by just makin this one a bit faster the huge grin will return to my face and my hard earned notes will stay in my wallet! Thats my theory anyway. If u have any other views or contradictions let me know.

Yes Gti cam and manifiold will help. Although i would doubt you will be close to 120bhp with those.

scrap the webber put on a scirocco 18 gti carb! alls you have to do is fit a manual choke! mate did it on his 1.6 driver and it was wasting gti's all day long and up the old 1/4 mile pod!

Short of changing the bottom end, high lift or even wild cams, changing the injectors, basically a engine swap i doubt you will get much closer to 120.

Unless you pay for it to be put on carbs, and even then the risk of it snapping the manifold consistently is pretty high. I would concentrate more on getting it cosmetically right, and how you would want it before touching the engine, then you may well be a few years older and have enough cash to get a gti, or do a complete engine swap.

Oh and by the way, ignore yellow, he doesn't know much, and is generally consider a dick on this place.

Thanks guys, opened my eyes to a few things. Unfortunately/ fortunately its cosmetically how i want it so i guess im just gonna be twiddlin my fingers for a while! Yeah i thought 120 was a bit optimistic from cams and manifold but wanted to check with people who know more than i do about vw's.  Just wanna say this is my first little forum thing and you guys are great! Know its a sunday afternoon but response times are super quick still!!!

Lofty, not meanin to be rude mate but how old are you and who are you insured with? Im 20 and insured by brentacre, wicked guys there that helped me out a lot, but unfortunately i smashed my little clio into a barrier 2yrs ago and the council charged me £2000 for the metre strech of barrier i dented. combined with the price of the written off clio my insurance headed skywards. A gti conversion or 1.8t is the plan for when i get back from travellin but for the moment the 1.6 is stayin where it is.

Not directed at me i know, but i am only 22 (well as of the 31st i am) carrying an endorsement for speeding on my license as well. With a 2.0ltr valver to drive. Insurance this year went down to £600, which is nice, but i started out the same as you. £1300 my first year on insurance, it's just a case of living with it for a year and then thinking about more serious mods.

Successfully hijacked by moi i do believe.
