40K service again
« on: 22 August 2006, 19:02 »
Hi dudes

Back again with with my 40k service, got some quotes and the best one was £165 + vat they are a vw specialist. They will do the spark plugs, oil filter, oil, air filter, fuel filter. (pollen filter at an addition cost of £16) and give the car a good checking over. What do you reckon ?

Also my golf is counting down like a bomb its says 900 miles to service. What happens when it gets to 0 ? will it blow up or will there be some warning message ? or will the car never drive again untill it is serviced hehe

I was thinking of getting it done at around 200 miles to go (worked out my miles and when I can get booked in)

got some funny quotes, aswell for £280, £340! £240 I called these places up listened to what they will do and is the same thing just a higher cost.

Other than this everything is working good touch wood.

Cheers

Sounds like a decent price for what your getting.

When it gets to zero, it'll beep at you and flash SERVICE NOW at you.

Hi Soulman:

The £165 sounds fine to me....BUT.

a) Which oil do you get ? Quantum (castrol made) 5-40w fully synthetic, Castrol SLX FS  0w-40w, or the  ordinary stuff.
b) Which plugs do you get ? Bosch Platinum or cheeper general ones
c) Which filters do you get, VW ones or spurious generic ones.

These parts, particularly the best fully synthetic oils, add significantly  :lipsrsealed: to the overall price.

You can get exactly right gear from GSF, and then pay their (the VW Spcialist's) labour charges for doing the work.  Happy motoring

We'd do the service for £150 or £175 with plugs all in. We are a VW/Audi Specialist.

that's oil (synta silver), oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and spark plugs. and a full inspection around the car to check lights are all working, condition of brake discs and pads, tyre wear, fluid levels, etc. Anything we found would be noted as an advisory/observation.

plugs would be bosch platinum ones. oil filter would be genuine vag.

We're based in pont-y-clun (5 mins from J34 on M4) tel: 01443 230018 :D

Hi Duncan and Dizzie

Car is a 1.6s golf 2001

I gave them a call they use 10\40 quantum silver. Just wondering once the oil is drained how muh oil needs to go back in ?

"generic spark plugs" is there a noticeable difference using the bosch platium ones ?

a VW air filter. I like the idea about buying the stuff from gsf and paying them to do the labour, is this accepted or considered cheeky ? should knock  bit off right ?

Whats this green air filter about ?

so basically for a service for this car I will need :

oil
oil filter
air filter
spark plugs
fuel filter
pollen filter

All available from gsf I hope. How much do you reckon they would knock off as a guess ?

Thanks guys for the info here :)

They may accept the Parts and just charge Labour, but they like the buying mark-up on the parts for themselves - which is not unreasonable.

I believe that Quantum silver oil is not Fully Synthetic and as such is classed as the "ordinary stuff".

Bosch Platim plugs are generally the best value for money on the 1984cc GTI and Turbo AUM and AUQ engines. Just dont know about the 1600 - sorry.

That Dizzie deal at his VW/Audi specialist is very good value. I'm impressed. Good price Dizzie  considering the price is including an extra 17.5% VAT to pay the EU taxes     VAT gives you nothing in England !
