Mk3 Golf GTI poor running, no power now wont start
« on: 22 August 2006, 13:26 »
Hi Guys,

My girlfriends got a mk3 golf gti 2.0 16V. It has been playing up for some time now. It has been extremely difficult to drive when cold, not revving and generally being sluggish. It is almost as bad when warm. It will barely go up to 70mph. There was a strong smell of petrol in the cabin. Like it was overfueling. She recently drove it to my house like this (Bristol to Birmingham). The following day she went out to start it and it would not go. It smelt of fuel but would just not turn over. AA were called and he did the usual checks, he removed the fuse to the fuel pump and basically got it started by burning the fuel already in the engine. He got it running but it was still idling terrible and didnt have any power (girlfriend took it for a spin). AA man looked on his laptop and said the only thing he could recommend was replacing the engine temp sensor. I told her not to take it home so it remained here with me. I looked on this forum and concluded that I needed to replace a few relays and sensors.

I have replaced the following:
Engine temp sensor
Relay 30 ECU
Fuel Pump Relay 167

I arranged for a mobile mechanic with VAG (or whatever it is) to come out and check the car over. He concluded the following:

Power to disti
Spark to all plugs
Fuel to rail

When you turn the key it tries to start but just wont fire. The oil light also flashes.

The mobile mechanic used the diag tool and it only came back with one error:

0740 crank sensor at chamber 1

He has recommended that the timing be checked. I'm not convinced but have little option. He is coming back to do this on thursday.

Does anyone have any other ideas about what might be at fault?

Thanks

Gilly

sounds like the crank position sensor has given up, common fault!
