GTI Ordering Delay Kerfuffle
« on: 19 August 2006, 01:03 »
Hi Folks, hope you can help.
I ordered a 3Dr, DSG, GTI from a UK VW dealer back at the end of June. I was told that the order was "on the system" and they'd let me know about build dates, stuff like that. Delivery was supposed to be end of August/start of September. After a week or two I was told that the factory was closed in the summer for a few weeks, so that'd make the date slip, but they'd let me know. But I heard nothing...
Saw my dealer today and they report that they will know a definate date in two weeks time, but delivery will be November probably. The salesman said that he didn't realise, but the dealership had sold it's allocation of GTI's but that mine is next to be accepted onto the system, and he'll let me know when he gets a build week. As it's going to be November, he suggested I might want to wait until January, so it'll be a year younger.

I dn't know what to do. If I cancelled (and hopefully get my deposit back) would another dealer ordering from scratch be able to get one quicker?
I really don't know the ins and outs of the dealer ordering process. Am I being taken for a mug here? What's all this allocation business?
Should I wait for LED rear lights or a facelift?
Should I wait for an Anniversary GTI? (anyone know when they're due?)

And more importantly, I negotiated a price back in June, and it'll still apply to the car if I wait for January delivery.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Its a bit hard to believe that a factory like VW will shut over summer for a couple of weeks.

Most car plants close in the summer for a few weeks for re-fits, electrical work and the like

Mine was an August delivery, but then I changed the spec a bit (sunroof / parking sensors / xenon) and now It's November....

Still, I've got a hire car at the moment (company paid for, not VW) so I'm not too unhappy that my 2 week old daughter isn't being sick on my new GTi

Try chatting with another dealer.  Can't hurt.  When I was looking at buying a UK spec not the import I ended with my dealer searched the stock lists of other dealers and there was a few GTi's with different spec.  First Golf I got few years ago was somebody elses cancelled order so never had to wait.  Must be ways around it!!!!

We've been closed for 5 weeks this year at the Mini Plant, the only fools working have been maintenance fools like me and planners overseeing contract work.  It's the norm to shut down a couple of times a year, re-tooling and improving processes takes time.

Although i have to admit i spent most of it climbing over the new mini and estate

At least your motor will be worth the wait...

I hope so Matt!

Sadly, I read this on another forum. (hope it's ok to quote it)

Quote
I have just had a call from my VW contact stating that nearly all this years allocation of GTI's have been sold and they will, apparently, be closing the order book, on the GTI, very shortly, which is good news for those of us that already own one as it will keep prices high, but if you want to order one it is tough luck!!

The R32 is similar and apparently if you order one now, the order process will not even be started until early 2007!!

DSG is an even bigger problem, and DSG, in any model, is going to be March next year, at the earliest.

This was released by VW UK today and apparently all dealers will know within a few days

Got a call from the dealer today.
My GTI, although deposit paid in June, still isn't ordered with VW and hasn't got a dialogue number.
Dealer doesn't have any allocation, but they will have come 1st October. At that point my GTI will be ordered with VW.
Bit fed up to be honest with the wait. I wish I'd been made aware of this allocation back in June, as I'd have gone to another dealer.
However, what's done is done, and with other dealers having allocation issues of their own, I will likely sit tight with this dealer and hope all comes good in the end.
The Dealer sales manager is phoning me agin on Friday and will "look at the deal again" and give me a few facts and figures, of throw in something extra like gap insurance or rear parking sensors to compensate me a little for all the hassle.

I decided to buy a new GTi with DSG on 24th August this year and after being fobbed off by multiple dealers, called one who said there was two on the system, but to be quick.  It was duly ordered, delivered to the dealer on 31st August and I took delivery on 2nd Sept.
So far so good.
