Newbie Alloy Wheel Fitment Question
« on: 16 August 2006, 20:02 »
Looking up the fitments for my 1998 Passat. Apparently it should be PCD 5x112

Now is that the stud pattern? (I.e. a 5x100 will not fit?)

Or is it offset I need to be looking at...

Also would MK4 Golf wheels fit a 1998 Passat??

Thanks in advance!

i always thought passats were 5x100 (like the golfs) however the mk5 golfs are 5x112. so if you've checked it out and it says they are 5x112 then thats what they are!! if so, no, mk4 golf wheels will not fit.

also mercedes are 5x112, so you get all pimp on it and fit some merc rims?! :P

Thanks for your help guys. I was always under the impression the Passat would happily accommodate Mk4 Wheel but obviously not.

So offset, is that how far the wheels sit inside the arches? Higher offset the further out the wheels sit?

Sorry, one more silly question...

The bore, I assume as long as its bigger than the suggested size, its ok???

... or does it need to be that exact size?

Thanks... No more silly Q's... (for now )

it doesnt matter if the bore is bigger, as u can usually get spigot rings (sorry about spelling, its sh*t) to reduce the size of the bore.... but it does need to be exact otherwise the wheel will vibrate slightly and bugger the bolts up!

then as long as the pcd (stud pattern) is ok, and the offset isnt too high (which could result in catching of the suepension / brake calipers / inner wheel arch) then the wheels should go straight on.

I still see there is a distinct lack of b!tch tit getting outage.

Ahhh... so if the offset is high it means the wheels sit further in towards the car?

yep.... its got to do with the midline of the wheel compared to the mounting face.

i dont know offhand wat the standard offset is for dubs, but with that figure, and the specs of the wheel, u can work out exactly wat spacers you need to bring the offset to the figure you want

Its also very dangerous as its the hole in the middle that supports all the weight of the car. If its not the right size or you havent bought some rings then the bolts will be taking the strain and sooner or later they will snap and you wheel will come off probably ending up very badly.
