The 2 pannels that look like grills behind the bumper and below the grill called? I noticed the nearside one one my mk1 is missing. Anyone know where I can get one from?

They're for winter to block off some of the cold air coming under the bonnet so the car can warm up quicker in cold conditions 

They're not that important, my last 3 mk1's didn't have them at all and I never had any problems

Thats what I thought before I got down to your post.. I think your right.

Gem, try searching lower front panel air intake... if there handed though, that could mean that they're unavailable for the N/S!

Someone mentioned "Slam panel" thats the panel that holds the bonnet lock, easy to remember really, its the panel that the bonnet slams against when closing...
