mk4 dash swap into mk3 help needed
« on: 15 August 2006, 09:08 »
i have mocked this dash up into the car i can get it to fit easy but............

the glove box will not sit flush or even go into the slot as the mk3 golf main beam/dash support runs across the gap.

the beam is probably a support for the car as it is bolted in from inside the door jams with some rather large torx bolts.  the only way around this i think is to cut out the section of the beam that is buggering up the glove box fitment and re weld in some metal/or bars that will go around the glove box.

or alternatively take the glove box off and just fix the covers the the dash so it looks like its a glove box but will not open.

anyone have any ideas or has anyone done this before.

(i will also have a full mk3 dash board available in a few weeks so anyone interested pm me with offers.  will come complete with everything centre chanel consloes, swithches, heater cotrols, vents, speakers and covers, steering column under plastics.(only thing not included is the steering colum surround plastics i have used these)

here is my car with the stock dash removed and the clocks still plumbed up as im still using the car.  you can see the metal beam that i am on about in the pictures

here is a picture of the mk4 dash, it was complete but i have removed all the bits n bobs so i can see what part of the dash touches the beam and where i can screw the dash down.

and here is the mk4 handbrake and gear stick console mocked up on the mk3, only prolem is the mk4s have the handbraked lever on the left of the car and the mk3 is in the centre so i am going to have to bend the handbrake lever a bit so it doesnt catch on the console.

if anyone can see a way to get the glovebox in without too much hassle then let me know pretty please>>>>

If i were you i would just sacrifice it and seal it shut. Seems the safest and easiest option.

i may do this option, but one other bit thats in the way is to the back of the radio cage as it wont go all the way in, but that an easy fix, a bit of heat and a hammer and slam away

yeah i have taken loads of pictures and know what ive done with the wiring so once ive finished the leather seats i will ask JV to create me a dash conversion post.

anyway i have decided that i will be cutting the glovebox out/off and fixing the glovebox door to the dash so it appears as if i have a glove box.

also got the mk4 clocks wired up and working now so im well chuft, see pictures, sorry for crap qaulity took them last night on completion and this morning on way into work whilst driving

last night efforts :

only problem was the dash protruded a bit too far so when i secured it in place and shut the doors the side mirror adjuster on the drivers door was touching the edge of the dash.  so i removed it all and trimmed a good half inch off the back of the dash so it should theoretically sit a bit further back in the car now and i should have some clearance with the top of the steering wheel and the speedo shroud as well as being able to adjust the seering colum as i clipped the under steering colum plastics on and the column adjuster handle couldnt move so i have trimmed the plastics to allow it to go down and tonight the dash should be fitted and ready to rock (apart from the glove box as i need to carefully trim and figure this out before i ruin the glove box.

cheers dizzie, pop down when you want mate i could do with a 2nd pair of eyes to look over the engine incase im missing something.

are you going to the gti festival in margam on the weekend. im popping down for a sniff if you fancy meeting up, you can come and see the car at my house then.

Do you have or know of a oil return pipe from the turbo (k04) for my engine as mine has been dented by the spanner that delivered it, i would like to find another one.  but if that fails i will cut out the kinked bit and weld a new section in but i dont want to risk loosing oil throug a weel weld etc.  any help
