Side trim and front spoiler - factory fit?
« on: 12 August 2006, 22:36 »
Have just had quite a bit of bodywork done.  Immaculate tailgate from breakers, new rear panel, front and rear bumpers (old ones were bent and practically white), rear arches filled and sprayed (ECP don't do rear wings and I couldn't afford VW ones).  Looks great - even the filling work is very nicely done.  I'll have to take some photos.  Next step is refurbished alloys.

When the car came back from the bodyshop, he had removed the thin red trim from the plastic trim on the sides of the car - presumably to do with taking it off to spray.  I know the bumpers had red trim from the factory.  But did the side trims?

Same for the annoying front spoiler that used to scrape on everything.  I let him take it off as it was a pain, and he said it wasn't factory fitted anyway.  Is this true?

Oops, it's an F-reg small bumper.  Pics will be forthcoming soon, I hope.

Front lip spoiler was a factory item on GTi's with the small bumper. It (allegedly) helped improve the low cd ratio of the car. Agree that if the car is lowered it catches on things and perhaps it looks better without it...............................

DOH! Meant to add: the small red trim was fixed above the rubbing rubbing strip along the sides as standard too.

What about the wheel arches?  Did they have red trim as standard or was it just the bumpers and side moulds?

Red trim was only on the side trim, above the rubbing strip. Not on the wheel arches, they were plain black.

Small bumper could have had the gti spoiler removed and a delux deep one put on. Either way, a spoiler was factory fit on them.

Interesting.  I happened to be in a dealer today, and asked the parts man about mk2 spoilers.  At first, he couldn't see any on the bumper screen, and told me that there was no such thing, then he looked on another screen and there they were, two different types of front spoiler.

The first type said "GTI, 16V" next to it.  Because of the comma, it wasn't clear whether it was meant for GTi /and/ GTi 16v, or just the latter.  The second type said nothing next to it, so presumably it was for all other models, whatever other means in this case.  :)

Does anyone know if the 8v and 16v had different front spoilers?

No they were both the same on the small bumper models although I have seen some with a cut out for brake cooling on 16v's. But this was on one or two I have seen and not all 16v's.

Hope that helps,

Nick
