Tempreture Gauge

Hi All

Just a quick question ive performed a search and could'nt find anything on this , My tempreture gauge on the dash was working fine and then i didnt use the car for 3 days and when i drove it yesterday i noticed the needle was'nt moving . Is there a fuse that could of blown ? everything else works fine on the car as normal , Also would the fan still kick in if the needle aint moving? i dont know where to start to try and fix this any help people?

The heater still blows hot and cold as normal.

First things first what model and engine is it?  It might be a dodgy sender or a loose connection onto the sender. Does your fuel gauge still work?

Sorry its a G reg 1989 ,1.8 gti 16v , and the fuel gauge still works fine

not too sure of the problem, i think the needle night have either come off the dial, or as monzablue16v mentioned, dodgy sender. Just to put your mind at rest (if you were that worried) Fan would still kick in no problems, as it is hardwired into the heat element so if that gets hot, fan kicks in, regardless of temp guage working or not.

bridge the connection on the sender which is on the water pipe coming out the head to see if its dodgy use a paper clip or something, it should make the needle go to the right and thereby elminate the sender or show u that the sender is duff

run the engine from cold & feel the bottom radiator hose, if it goes warm almost straight away your thermostat is stuck open or missing.  More likly to be a sender fault though since its just stopped working, stats usually fail closed.
