GTI headlights in CL?
« on: 09 August 2006, 21:59 »
I've just got some headlights out of a GTI from the scrappy which I want to put into my CL. I see that the GTI headlights have an extra spotlight to the CL lights. When I plug the new headlights in the everything but the spotlight works - i noticed that in the old headlights the white, yellow and brown wires go to the main beam and in the new ones white and brown goes to the spotlight and yellow and brown goes to the main beam. Any ideas? Thanks

How did you test the light's as the std light's have a 3 pin h4 connector and the gti one's have 2 seperate 2 wire h1 connector's?..... You can rewire the new light's ...you will need to split the brown wire and send this to both light's and then connect the yellow (to main beam)and the white (to dip)using ternimal's or chop into the original loom and connect it to the gti loom....for wiring diagram's look at a haynes manual this will help you connect them up correct..

Both the new and old headlights have the same connector - a 4 pin one with 4 wires going into it. I took the connectors from the GTI to compare - they are identical to the ones already in my car.

both the bulbs and the fuses are ok, the main beam works fine when they're plugged in, just the spotlights don't work. also, when I swap the yellow wire from the main beam in place of the white in the spotlight the spotlights work...

Does anyone know if the spotlights should come on at the same time as the main beam lights? then I could use the same wire that goes to the main beam (yellow) to power the spots - leaving the white wire redundant?

I am a little confused... dip/main beam lighting order

1. turn headlight switch position 1 = sidelight's
2. turn headlight switch again to turn on dip beam (outer light's on gti)
3. indicator switch click back and main beam comes on (inner spot lamp's on gti)

When dip beam is on you should have the outer bulb's on and when main beam is on you should have the outer dip light's and the inner (spot) light's on (all 4 headlamp's bulb's). You can not drive around with all these on all the time as mr plod will give you grief, and you will dazzle oncomer's.... can you just confirm what you mean by main beam and spot lamp's...
