Car for the bird!

So it looks like i'm getting a mk1 Cabby for my lovely girl friend!

The one we are looking at on Sat is a 86 1.8 GTI with 123k on the clock. It has a new clutch and exhaust but i know nothing about mk1 ones and i looks like we gotta keep it out side so the roof is of some concern!

What should i be looking for!?? Cheers guys!

I have to keep mine outside unfortunately n i've got a roof cover(modified by me ma!),blanket,carseat covers,wheel clamp n steering wheel lock!Just to make sure mine is lovely n warm n safe!
As for the car its self,i reckon ur lass will know if its the one or not just by lookin at it!Plus tell her not to worry if she can't drive it properly at first cos i cudn but now its great!Mechnically,mine was sound,i reckon just check for the usual leaks,damages etc! Check ur actual hood mechnism n fluid n if it has any tears-can b pricely!
