Lumpy Golf Coil?

have a 95 gti 8v golf and i doesnt maintain idle when its cold and runs lumpy when accelerating,  is has also lost power, and there is a strong smell of petrol when started in the morning.
Replaced all the usual bits, leads dizzy cap rota arm, plugs, fuel and ecu relays, temp sendor and cleaned the throttle body.
Starting to get annoyed with it now, could it bee the coil packing up, what are the signs of the coil going?
Any other ideas what it could be?

got same prob here, apart from the strong smell of petrol.  its doin my head in too!!  replaced the throttle body and done full service and other bits like the dizzy and plugs.  if u find out what it is pls put it in coz its drivin me mad
