ABS Light - Looks like?
« on: 03 August 2006, 00:37 »
Now this may be a silly question - but what does the ABS light look like? In the manual it says it's in the panel to the right of the light switch, but mine's just a normal panel? Does it share the brake pad wear indicator?

1994 GTI if that helps...

Is your car fitted with ABS? it may not be on early models.

Well I've got the ABS ECU under the rear seat and sensor/rotors behind the discs. Never needed it so don't know if it works though

Slam the brakes on above 40 ish then and see if you skid. If you do its not working. If however you feel the pedal judder/vibrate then its working. Cant belive youve never used it! I used to use it daily when i had it, saved my life loads a times!

You should also have a strange looking box at the rear of the engine bay with metal pipes coming from it . Also to check where the light should be , lift your back seats and unplug one of the sensor leads that you will find there . This should then light up something on the dash .

The only other thing i can think of is that there was a fault on the ABS and whoever had it before changed the panel deliberatly .

well ok moving on... just changed the front discs/pads and the pad wear sensor came on. It won't go away! Wanted to know if that's the abs light too...

... however, I'm sure when I fitted my phone kit, removing that panel on the right revealed an unused plug. hmmm... the mind boggles!

Did your new pads have wires on them? Did you connect the wire back up to the wear sensor? People often remove the bulb if the abs fails.

I connected them when fitting. Tried disconnecting them too, that didn't help. Maybe it knows it's in for an MOT Friday and is trying to commit suicide?

Might get the voltmeter on the wiring behind the panel I seem to think exists...

The ABS light on the panel is orange and should come on with ignition on but not started, it goes out after engine start.
