my new 16v now not starting HELP
« on: 30 July 2006, 22:17 »
Rite this is pretty sh1te. had my 16v for a week no probs, didn't take a mechanic when i bought it checked it myself as i know a bit about cars. since then 2 of my m8s who are mechanics and 1 who is an absolute golf nut have all said it seems sound and its a pukka car! drove to birmingham yesterday with the missus stayed the nite see tony hawks and mat hoffman at a show had a roast dinner and drove back. was inside for about an hour saying good by to the missus . went outside got in started reversing it off the drive and had very little revs and it cut out in the road. several attempts to start were futile and it ended up ova some old boys driveway. said old boy then comes out and has a go at me asking y i couldn't have broken down sumwhere else!!!!!!!!!!!! so i call a couple of pals round and get it pushed back on the drive.
have got spark from coil and petrol being pumped and she sounds like she wants to go but then just has a splutter and wont catch.
Is this a common fault does anyone know after a long journey? 170m approx. does she need time to cool down? oil temp was 92-98 and water 90, 36 mpg.
have heard that sum golfs suffer fuel starvation when hot is this true? any help well appreciated have got to go to work tom. do your best fellas

You've got a spark from the coil, but have you got a spark from the dizzy as well?

The coils on mk3s are prone to failure, perhaps the spark isn't strong enough?

take the cam belt cover off and check the belt hasn't snapped, then check the condition of it.  If you look at the digifant tuning guide in the mk2 maintenance + info section it tells you how to check the timing.  Its not quite the same as on a MK2 8v, just ignore the dizzy timing bit :)
