Lack of Ooomph...
« on: 30 July 2006, 21:15 »
Hello all. I'm pretty much new here. I own a '97 P 1.8 GL, which is my first car. 127,000. When I bought it I knew nothing about Golfs (now wish I'd gone the mk2 route, but hey!).

Now, the car is about as powerfull as...a not very powerful thing. I'm assuming its 8v. Any ideas as to what I can do to increase the power? Insurance isn't an issue (thank you NFU!), in terms of funds, around £500 I guess... Cheers!

I was looking at the 8v route before getting the 16v and was told that there isn't a lot you can do to them except the usuall...performance drop in filter, free flowing exhaust. You can also have the cam from a Mk2 8v and a chip, all of this will cost you over the £500...about £800 and will get you iro 20bhp more.

For your money you could do the exhaust and filter no probs

Oops..missed the GL bit  :embarassed:

Give AmD or stealth a ring...but you might be out of luck with a GL.

you've pretty much got a restricted 1.8 8v gti engine from the mk2 in there. Main restriction is in the throttle body. You could start replacing bits of the engine with mk2 gti (various 8v and 16v bits) but it's a bit expensive for something that would still be slower than a higher spec mk3...
