40k service alert

howdy all
mk4 golf 1.6s 2001
turned my ignition on to just get access to my power to open some windows. The display where the miles are showed up and said "2000 service miles" which was odd as I'm only 1500 miles away from 40k service give or take a mile or two. Is this service warning accurate or does it just give you a little warning that your need a service soon so be prepapred to spend some buckaroo's
just wondering as will be my first service with car, got me wondering.

Maybe the last time it was done the mechanic just set it up for a 20k service on the indiactor and might not have been serviced dead on 20,000miles. Theres a pretty easy way to turn it off have a look at the vortex diy forum in the thread above.

Mine comes on every 10,000 miles, but starts the countdown 2000 miles before its due then continues in 100 mile increments.
