Hello, just wanted to know if the VW sat nav is worth the extra money. Have a GTI and was thinking of adding it to the car. Does it contain maps of Europe including Poland? Is it reliable? I know that it is expensive but it just adds to the look of the interior of the car!!!

Hi there, I think the sat nav is pretty good and definetly enhances the std dash.  My Golf came with the sat nav as a factory option by the first owner.  Apparently it sounds better than the std head unit.  There are 2 versions - CD and DVD.
The DVD is the whole of Europe while the CD is country by country.  I have found it to be very reliable  :smiley:

I think it's well worth the money... Go for the DVD version if you can, it's got countries in Europe which I've never heard of. As for the looks, it's a million times better than those ones you stick on the windscreen with a suction cup...

what's it like compared to say Tom Tom Go?  does it have postcode search?  are the roads easy follow? audible directions?

It does have partial postcode search, e.g. you could enter RG31 5 and it would then give you a choice of roads within that postcode area.

Certainly does have audio directions, which are easy to understand and follow, and a button to replay the instructions if you missed them. It can also be set to display the current road you are on even if you have not plugged in a route (which I find very useful sometimes)

Arrows etc for directions are displayed both on the colour screen, and also on the screen between the speedo and rev counter.

No doubt that an aftermarket version is cheaper but it will never be completely integrated

Tom tom and other screen mounts are never a match for factory fitted or aftermarket in-dash wired in units.

They may have a pretty picture but the actual dead reckoning is miles off

For example if you go through a tunnel or an area with high buildings the screen mounts loose their way.

Plus if you leave them in the car they get stolen - A LOT!

out of interest could you get hold of the sat nav DVD unit and install it yourself / have it installed.

I have TomTom on a PDA (the speed camera overlay is handy) but I think it would be nice to have the uprated system in my GTi (when it arrives)
