Make sure your getting the tdi thats advertised because a few are chipped ie a 110 to 150. One way to tell the difference is the sticker under the boot carper that shows the KW (85kw=115bhp) produced by the engine. Check the usual golf common faults listed in the threads above. Try and drive a main dealer example before looking privatly so you know how a tdi should drive.

TDI engines are generally very strong.

when test driving one make sure it pulls cleanly form around 1500rpm until at least 3500rpm (starts running out of power after 3000rpm) in all gears

test for clutch slip by putting it into 4th at 30-35mph and plant your foot; also do this for the other gears!

loads to look out for each with their own characteristics.  all depends on your budget tbh  :undecided:

the best and most popular ones are the

110
115
130
150

the latter 3 are the PD engines which offer more power and torque along with a 6 speed box.

that link will tell you what to look out for; sadly its a long list but don't let that put you off the MK4

Hi there i am new to the site and would like to say first HELLO

I'm also looking at buying a Mark 4 Golf TDI.  And wanted some help so that i don't look like a complete n00b when i go to look at some.

I'm looking at getting a 2002+ GT TDI 150 and the main think i've seen on auto trader is that they all have different badges on the rear some have, GTI some have GT TDI and some just have TDI (silver surround with red middle), now is there just one badge for the proper GT TDI 150 or do you get different one? As i don't want to travel to look at someone TDI 130 thats been miss listed as a 150.

Thanks guys

the 150's built in 2002 are most likely the anniversary models and tended to be badged as GTI.

2003 + plus models should be badged with all red TDI but unfortunately most dealers were pretty slack when it came to badging the car.

best way to tell is to check the sticker in the spare wheel well.

96kw = 130
i think is 110 = 150 bhp model  :undecided:

best question to ask the seller is what kW is the engine output. thats the easiest way to tell them apart
