MK4 VW Golf GTi - Some Help on Buying One pls?
« on: 23 July 2006, 14:17 »
Hello there!

I am new to this site, and am logging in for the first time.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me please, as I am looking for a Mk 4 Golf (around 2001 - 2002) VW Golf GTi 2.0 or 1.8 T or GT TDI, with mileage no more than 65,000 - looking to spend around £6-6.5k.

Help on:

1.  Is this is feasible price range for what im after?
2.  Does anyone know which one is generally better - ie a GTi 2.0 petrol or the diesel versions, given the year of make of Golf that im after?
3.  Can anyone recommend what to look out for if im looking at Golf GTi's which are 4/5 year olds? - typical things that go wrong on the Gti/GT TDI models.
4.  Can anyone pls advise me on the differences between the "red i" and "green i" GTi models??
5. Finally - can anyone recommend the best place to start looking any GTI's pls?

Many thanks, your help is appreciated.

Ket

1) Yes
2) Depends what your after?  Is economy important? ie. Do you do many miles? 1.8 T's are best of both worlds, IMO, & are very tunable.
3) There's a good guide 'stickied' at the top of the Mk4 section.
4) Never heard of green i's as standard - I believe they are 'nicked' from the Transporter TDi's & used by some Golf owners??  Red i's DO NOT mean anything about the model - Completely random, thanks to our slack UK dealer network.
5) 'Cars For Sale' section on here, or Autotrader website.

With what model to buy it depends what sort of driving you do and how much insurance you want to pay. If insurance wasnt a problem id buy the 1.8t but for me its expensive so i brought 2.0 and im happy with it. The diesels are very good cars and if your worried about fuel consumption get one as when im driving the 150 bhp tdi it regularly returns 50-60mpg and drives really nicely but doesnt have the revs i'd like it to have.

I'd say go for the 1.8T, Very good for performance, tunability and power.

Most of all though check out the buying guide/things likey to go wrong threads on here - they are a few things to look out for on the MK4 and you really should find out about them before you go looking at cars.
