Will VW keep you informed of delivery?
« on: 21 July 2006, 18:01 »
what happens when your car is ready for collection?

1/. Does the dealer phone you up?

2/. And is it true they ask for insurance details to tax the car? if so what exactly do they need?

3/. Do you insure your car on the same day as delivery?

My dealer phoned when the car had arrived in the UK, then sent out a couple of forms to get the car registered.

Once the dealer had the car, they called again to arrange a delivery date, which allowed me to get my insurance changed
over to the new car for the required date.  I had to get a copy of the insurance certificate sent to the dealer to allow
them to get the car taxed.

1. They seem to call you around 1 weeks prior to delivery

2. They need an insurance certificate to tax your car - yes

3. I would insure it a few days earlier to save grief

If the Dealer gave you an OTR (On the Road) price, that will have included the cost of first registration, and tax for 12 months (well it should be :) ).  You might want to check if you'll save more than you'd lose if changing that to 6 months, etc.  I.E. as essentially a discount, although saying that it may be a little late in the day, but worth a try I guess.  (I did this with a previous car and got more off than would have been the difference).

kool, so id have to insure my car first before i can produce an insurance certificate for the dealer to tax it, but wouldnt that be the cover note though? as they usually take a while to send the actual insurance certificate through, and will the dealer except the cover note? anyone tried it?

what about payment for the car?  can you buy the car through a normal debit visa card? or are the other ways the dealer wants you to purchase the vehicle?
i've never actually spent this amount of money before till now.

Dealers won't accept Credit Cards, so it'll need to be a Debit Card, (or possibly a Bankers draft, Money Transfer, etc) - but like The Doc said you should really be having a chat with the Dealer about this since they'll be able to inform you better about what specifics they do, some dealers can act differently to others.  E.g. When buying from a Car Supermarket in the past I paid using a couple of Credit Cards, but recently at a VW Dealer I was told they don't accept Credit Cards, only Debit Cards, and I suspect not cash (nobody likes holding that sort of money on site and they have to pay to put it in their Bank).
