Cold Start and Engine Stalls 1.6 GTI
« on: 21 July 2006, 11:45 »
Hi there,

I need your advice with a problem I have on my Golf GTI mk1 1.6 1982.

It is always difficult to cold start the engine and I´ve checked almost everything on the car including a relay and a fuel filter replacement.

The car cold starts fine at first try, but the idle speed after start decreases enourmously to around 200 RPM than it starts increasing slowly to around 800 RPM.

Everytime this happens and if the engine kills after the first try it is almost impossible to get it started on the second, third, and subsequent attempts.

Also I have another problem that usually happens when I have less fuel on the tank, as every time I take a narrow corner the engine for some reason stalls, and only starts reving again after the car is stabilized.

Help Please...........................

Hi

Before you go any further, make sure it is well serviced including the air and fuel filter and you have a fullish tank.
1. check your fuel filler neck, if its rotten change it yesterday.
2. don't run them low on fuel, the pump picks up loads of crap (see above) and the fuel distriubtor gets the ar*e.
3.  get the by-pass valve, disonnect the pipes from it, look down the hole, it should be blocked off, turn the ignition on, the hole will very slowly open (10 minutes) (change if not)
4. warm up vave, make sure you have feed to it, if not make sure the thermo time switch have feed to it and is working properly.
5. if you still have no joy, you may need to get the air fuel mixture needle adjusted (specialist repairer)

If you haven't already but an OLD haynes manual from e-bay for your golf, not a new one as they are pony and don't have all the information in them.  (it will also give an explantion of how CIS works and where the parts are located that I mentioned above)

Hope this helps
