A few queries.

Any help very much appreciated:

Which oil should I use, silver VW?

Which oil filter and air filter?

Which spark plugs perform best?

Does the '97 16v have a knock/oxygen sensor and automatically advance/retard timing for different fuel grades?

Can I take off my steering wheel easily without getting blammed by the airbag? It needs aligning.

Go to your local GSF(German,Swedish&French) outlet and ask them for the bits, they will offer you different brands if you request this. I use the Bosch platinum plugs...a little more expensive but do the trick. Don't forget the dizzy cap and rotor arm as well(the rotor arm may be glued on so gently cut it off), these make all the difference.

As for oil I use comma semi synthetic and does the trick fine in mine(AmD tuned 16v).

My 96N automatically knows what fuel is in and adjusts fine...I use Tesco 99ron as found it better in mine that opti and ulti...and it's 6-7p a litre cheaper

My 'local' GSF is about 10,000 miles away (in Germany, Sweeden or France)! Repco (Halfords equivalent) is about the best we have here in New Zealand, we have no owners club (that I can find), no specialists and information is sparse at best so I truly appreciate any wisdom I can glean from this forum,

Tesco fuel  do you know what s**t is in that..!!
My mate belss him had a VR6 Highline spec that he filled up at Tesco religiously.
It went through fuel filters like no-ones business.
He was advised to change to a better graded premium fuel by a VW Specialist
No probs anymore
I find Texaco superb, but i suppose its horses for courses 
As for your oil i've always gone with Oil from VW and Bosch Spark Plugs

Use Synta silver oil.
Use genuine oil and air filter.
Again the dealer for the spark plugs.
97 16v will have knock control, so 95 or 98 RON fuel is fine.
If you are going to take off the steering wheel, make sure you disconnect the battery negative first, that will avoid any problems with the airbag.

I changed my steering wheel without any problems. I was advised and I did follow this - Yes as Corin says disconnect the battery, but both terminals and make sure niether of them are touching anything and WAIT for at least 15 minutes. This allows any residual current to seep away.
