Its easy mate, well sort of. The v6 in the 4motion is the same as the vr6 with a 24v head. I've had my apart already as ya know  ;D

Would deffo have the Anniv, for several reasons:

Firstly, whilst not doubting the ability or performance of the 4motion, it is just another Golf - it has been in production for a long time and there are loads of them around.

The anniversary is a limited edition model (2000 units), and as the last model developed of the Mk4, it represents the culmination of the Mk4 engineering experience.

It is a far more special car.

Secondly, in many cases, this one included, tuning a turbo charged car is more simple than tuning a normally aspirated car, fact.

Bearing in mind that if you do go for the 4motion, you will already be spending ?3500 more than you would if you bought the annivesary. if you start talking about supercharging it at ?2k (and believe me, that would be the minimum you'd pay) you'd be able to chuck ?5500 at the anniversary to call it even - and at that point, you could have a proper, low compression engine running a big turbo and specialist management giving you 350 bhp minmium (I know this as a mate runs this spec engine in his Octavia).

I can't help thinking that you might be a little bit biased here mr 6, and any question involving a desendant of your car Vs anything else, will get the same answer - if its got a sixpot under the bonnet, its gonna be better! ;D

I think i'm on my own on this one!  :'(
One thing i do have to say is you can pick up a 4motion for much cheaper, but not brand new.
The 6 pot will always have more tuning potential, thats a fact. EIP do turbo kits that take a vr6 over 500bhp. Obviously you do need lower end work.
The point is the v6 is more powerful to start with(more cylinders) so if you are gonna tune it , it will always be more reliable than 1.8T.
I do admit i am biased as i think the narrow angle 6 is a smashing motor, and you can't BEAT 4 wheel drive  ;D

I do have to add, that if money were no object I woud rather be tuning the V6. As Mr 6 pointed out, you have two more cylinders and an extra 1000cc to start with.

If you were chucking endless money at either, the larger capacity, 6 will chuck out more power, as whatever you do the 1.8 you can do to the V6 too (as long as you've added the turbo!) and you will always be those two cylinders and 1000cc ahead.

I have to d=say that its a nice dilema to have!  ;D

Quite right you can't beat 4 wheel drive. But i don't personally think the VW Haldex system used in the V6 is all that cop.  If you are compring it to a full time 4wd car like a subaru or Escort cosworth.

It is permanent 4 wheel drive, split 60/40, or synchro if ya like.
I'm just biased about the v6 cos i obviously own an earlier one.

where as im biased to a 1.8t (even though i aint got a blower on mine!!), turbos have come on so much in the last 7 years then engines are better the blowers are stronger using better bearing and seals (when i used to have me old turbo cars you were forever watchin all your gauges and preying they werent gonna blow a seal or melt a piston) the realiability of the 1.8 20v engine is very good, after all it is based on the old 16v lump with an extra intet valve thrown in for each cylinder!!!, this disscussion could go on for ever its all down to personal taste and the cash youve got to spend, on the car and any future tuning mods etc!!!, take em both out for a test drive!!! and have fun!!! ;D :D :D

Thats why its not a good idea to tune it too much, could affect long term reliability.
